A ball gown is the correct female attire for social occasions where
white tie or evening dress is specified on the invitation. The ball gown
is traditionally a full-skirted gown delicately created from luxurious
fabric that at least reaches the ankles. The design of the ball gown has
not changed much since the mid-1800s. Although man-made fabrics are
often used in their creation these days, the most common fabrics are
still silk, satin, taffeta and velvet with trimmings of pearls, lace,
embroidery, sequins, ruffles and ruching. Ball gowns are generally
accessorised with stoles, capes or cloaks, couture or vintage jewellery,
dancing shoes, clutch style evening bags and opera length gloves.
